Welcome to Mark Laubach's Thawte.com Web Of Trust Page
Updated: 12 April 2006
I am a notary with the Thawte.com Web
of Trust, frequently abbrievated as "WOT". In addition, my
PGP RSA key is listed in the The
Global Internet Trust Register .
I live in the Mountain View / Sunnyvale / Cupertino / Los Altos
area and can easily make arrangements to meet with you to validate
your credentials for Thawte WOT points.
At this time, I am easily available for meetings, including those
outside these towns.
WOT notarization requires these forms of in date
government issued id's: such as
- state/national issued driver's license,with photo ID
- country issued passport, with photo ID
- country issued immigration card, with photo ID
- state/national issued taxpayer certificate, e.g. U.S. social
security card
The WOT point system is based on notarizing assured identify
credentials. The more credentials, the more points I will assign.
The maximum number of points I can give out is 35 points. Here
is my point system:
- State/national ID with photo (e.g. driver's license, passport,
"green" card) - 10 points each
- State/national ID without a photo (e.g. U.S. social security
card) - 5 points
- From one of your WOT registered email addresses:
- Exchanging email with me at laubach@matmos.com
- 5 points
- Sending me PGP signed or signed&encrypted mail to me at
laubach@matmos.com - 5
points
- Make sure your certificate or key is available on the
appropriate public server(s) so I can obtain it for
verification of the signature, do not send me the key or
certificate.
- I call up directory service and ask for you, they give me a
phone number, I call up, you answer - 5 points
There are some requirements:
- If you used a non-photo ID number as your WOT national
identification number you must bring the original of
that card and a state/national photo ID
- For example: You used a U.S. Social Security Number
card, then also bring a driver's license or passport or
both
- You must bring a xerographic copy of each ID and
the original
- If the ID number you used for your Thawte.com national ID
number is expired, then you must bring the expired ID as well as
the in date replacement ID.
- For example, if your passport expired and that number was
used in your WOT registration, bring that passport as well as
the replacement passport.
Here is the process:
- We meet somewhere
- You give me your IDs and your photo copies
- I give you a form to fill out
- I examine each copy and verify it is a copy of the original
and everything is in date
- I examine each original Photo ID and verify that the photo is
a reasonable likeness of you
- I examine each copy Photo ID and verify that the copy photo is
a reasonable likeness of you
- If everything looks good, I sign the form, indicate assignment
points, and keep the copies. You get your originals
back.
- Within 24 hours of our meeting, I will
- verify that at least one of the credentials you presented
matches your WOT national identify number,
- and if so, will then update your Thawte.com WOT points, and
you will receive a message from Thawte.com about the
update
- and if not, I will get back in contact with you
If you are a PGP user and you would like me to sign your
key(s):
- Please make sure your PGP public key is registered in the
public key servers for each key you want me to sign.
- Dust off your PGP application and please sign or sign &
encrypt at least one of your email messages to me using one of
your keys.
- Bring a physical copy of your PGP key fingerprint(s) with you,
do not send them to me ahead of time. I'll keep the copy.
- If you forget to bring a copy, then that's ok. We'll create
a shared secret when we meet.
- I will sign your PGP key(s) within 24 hours after I receive
your fingerprint(s) and send you the signed keys in an encrypted
and signed email message.
- It will be up to you to update the servers.
